Answers
Can CLUZ and MARXAN be used for terrestrial conservation
planning?
Yes. Both CLUZ and MARXAN can be used for terrestrial, freshwater and
marine conservation planning. The principles of mapping conservation features,
setting representation targets and identifying portfolios of planning
units that meet these targets are exactly the same whether on land or
in water. MARXAN was originally designed for marine planning projects
but is has been used successfully for terrestrial and freshwater planning
as well. For an example of a terrestrial planning exercise then visit
our Maputaland project website.
What is the difference between CLUZ and MARXAN?
CLUZ consists of two parts. The first part acts as an ArcView GIS interface
for the MARXAN conservation planning software and the second allows on-screen
conservation planning. The interface for MARXAN is designed to be easily
understood by beginners and does not give all of the possible MARXAN options.
Specifically, it uses default values for some of the cost functions, it
assumes that all of the conservation feature targets should be fully met
and it does not allow the use of more specialist planning algorithms.
People who are interested in using the more specialised functionality
of MARXAN can still use CLUZ to import, display and export the relevant
data but should run MARXAN independently, using its Input File Editor
software to set the more specialised parameters.
Is there a version of CLUZ for software other than
ArcView GIS v3?
CLUZ has only been written to be used as an interface for ArcView v3.
There are no plans for producing versions for other software packages
but the author would fully support anyone who wanted to convert any of
the CLUZ modules.
Will you add extra features to CLUZ?
CLUZ will be gradually updated and improved based on feedback from users,
so please contact the author if there
are any extra features that you would like incorporated. Please also make
sure that you register yourself as a CLUZ user by clicking
here. You will then be updated whenever a new version is available.
How should I cite CLUZ?
Please cite CLUZ in the following way:
Smith, R.J. (2004) Conservation Land-Use Zoning
(CLUZ) software <http://www.mosaic-conservation.org/cluz>. Durrell
Institute of Conservation and Ecology, Canterbury, UK.
How should I pronounce CLUZ?
The word CLUZ should be pronounced in the same way as the word "clues".
The best way to make the author of the software wince is to pronounce
it to rhyme with the word "buzz".
